The Honda Rancher gives you several ways to configure a utility ATV around the way you ride and work. Every current trim starts with a fuel-injected, liquid-cooled 420cc engine. The choices are in the equipment around it: two- or four-wheel drive, foot shifting or an automatic transmission, power steering, and rear suspension. Understanding those choices makes the long model names much easier to use. Honda's 2027 Rancher specifications
Start with four clear choices
Honda's current U.S. lineup contains four Rancher trims. Think of each name as a description of its controls and chassis, rather than a ranking from small engine to large engine.
The two foot-shift trims do not include EPS. Both current automatic trims do. That matters if steering assistance is high on your list: it narrows the current Rancher choice before you compare suspension. Honda's current trim lineup

Choose how you want to shift
On a foot-shift Rancher, you select each gear with your foot. The clutch operates automatically, so “manual” does not mean using a motorcycle-style hand clutch lever. This is a useful configuration to consider if you prefer deciding when each gear change happens.
DCT stands for Dual-Clutch Transmission. It can select gears automatically and also gives you a manual shift option. If you want the ATV to handle normal gear changes while you concentrate on steering and terrain, begin with the two DCT trims. Both shifting arrangements include reverse. Neither the presence of DCT nor the word “automatic” should be used to assume that every Honda ATV has the same range selector or transmission controls. Honda's Rancher technology explanation
Compare the two automatic Ranchers carefully
The DCT EPS trim deserves its own place in the comparison. It combines automatic shifting and steering assistance with the swingarm rear suspension. You do not have to choose IRS to get those two convenience features.
The DCT IRS EPS version changes the rear suspension to an independent arrangement and adds suspension travel and ground clearance. That gives a customer who regularly encounters uneven ground a concrete reason to compare it. It also changes the fit: Honda lists a 35.4-inch seat for the IRS version versus 33.6 inches for the DCT EPS swingarm version. The IRS machine is also longer. Try the riding position and check the space where you will store or transport it; a feature list cannot tell you how either configuration fits your body or property. Match the configuration to your actual use
Make a short list of the jobs and routes that matter most. Do you want to select gears yourself? Is steering assistance a priority? Do your regular routes call for selectable four-wheel drive? Are rough surfaces common, or do you prefer the fit of the swingarm version?
Use those answers to narrow the trims, then compare the specific units available. For carrying or towing, check the exact model's ratings and owner's manual, including instructions for combined loads. A rack rating is not the vehicle's total payload, and a larger accessory does not increase a published limit. For trailer or storage fit, measure the usable opening and the complete unit with its fitted accessories. These are practical buying checks, not promises that a particular configuration will suit every rider or task.

Rancher or something else?
A short Rancher history
The Rancher name arrived for the 2000 model year with the TRX350 family. The 420 platform brought fuel injection and liquid cooling for 2007, and a DCT/IRS version followed for 2009. That history is useful when shopping used: a familiar Rancher badge does not guarantee the same transmission, engine or suspension as a current model. Honda's Rancher history
Rancher questions
Are all Honda Ranchers four-wheel drive?
No. The current base FourTrax Rancher is two-wheel drive. The three trims with “4x4” in their names offer selectable two- and four-wheel drive.
Does EPS mean automatic shifting?
No. EPS means Electric Power Steering. DCT describes the transmission. The current Rancher DCT trims happen to include both features, but the abbreviations mean different things.
Does every Rancher have independent rear suspension?
No. In the current lineup, only the trim with “IRS” in its name has independent rear suspension. The other three use a swingarm rear arrangement.
Can a Rancher shift automatically?
Yes. The two DCT trims offer automatic gear selection and a manual shift option. The other two current trims require foot-selected gear changes.
How much can the current Rancher tow?
Honda lists 848 pounds for each current trim. Use the exact unit's owner's manual for towing instructions and operating limits; the headline figure does not account for every loading situation. 2027 ratings
Are these specifications the same on an older Rancher?
Do not assume so. Match the model year and exact trim before comparing specifications or accessories. The details in this guide describe the current 2027 U.S. lineup.
