The Honda Recon is a compact adult utility ATV with a carbureted, air-cooled 229cc engine and two-wheel drive. The current choice is simple: select gears with a foot lever on the standard Recon, or use handlebar shift buttons on the Recon ES. Both retain the same basic engine and chassis configuration. Recon or Recon ES?

ES means electric shift. It does not mean electric power steering, and it does not make the Recon choose gears automatically. Both versions provide five forward gears and reverse. Choose between them by the shift controls you prefer, rather than expecting a larger engine or four-wheel drive from the ES badge. Honda's Recon trim and technology explanation

Decide whether the size and equipment fit your needs

Honda lists the Recon at 40.7 inches wide, with a 31.2-inch seat. Its smaller footprint is a useful reason to include it when comparing machines for a property, storage space or trailer. Measure your actual access and loading space; a published width does not establish that every route or trailer is suitable. Recon dimensions

For carrying and towing, Honda lists 33 pounds on the front rack, 66 on the rear and a 500-pound towing capacity. Those are separate limits. They are not a total-payload calculation, and the exact owner's manual remains the place to check loading and operating instructions. Recon ratings

If selectable four-wheel drive, power steering or automatic gear selection is a priority, compare the equipment available in the Rancher lineup. The Recon is a choice to evaluate on its own strengths and limits; it should not be recommended simply because it is smaller than another ATV.

Small does not mean youth

Honda recommends the current Recon for riders aged 16 and older. Consider the rider's fit and experience, follow the owner's manual and take appropriate rider training. “Compact” describes the machine, not permission to treat it as a children's model. Honda's rider-age recommendation

Recon or something else?

A short Recon history

Honda introduced the Recon for the 1997 model year. Its compact utility role has continued through later changes, including refreshed bodywork for 2021. When comparing used examples, confirm the year and equipment instead of assuming that the current guide describes every Recon. Honda's Recon history

Recon questions

Is the Recon four-wheel drive?

No. Both current U.S. Recon trims use two-wheel drive through a rear driveshaft.

Is Recon ES automatic?

The rider still selects gear changes. ES provides electric push-button shifting; it is not an automatic gear-selection mode.

Does ES mean power steering?

No. ES and EPS are different terms. Neither current Recon trim includes EPS.

Is the engine 250cc?

Honda describes the Recon as a 250-class ATV, but its listed displacement is 229cc. Use the exact specification when comparing engines.

Do these specifications apply to every model year?

No. This guide covers the 2027 U.S. lineup. Check the exact year and trim of the unit you are considering.
