A first motorcycle brings new controls to learn, new questions for parents and plenty to look forward to. Start with the kind of riding your family wants to do, then compare the bike's size and controls with the rider's experience and readiness.

Honda's CRF50F, CRF110F and two CRF125F sizes give families four recreational off-road models to explore. Each combines a different size with a particular set of controls. Compare those differences with the rider's current skills, with appropriate instruction and adult supervision as part of the plan.

The specifications below are for U.S. 2027 models, checked October 29, 2026. A listed motorcycle may be a different year; check its individual details.

Meet the four models

CRF50F: a compact place to begin comparing

The CRF50F has the lowest seat in this comparison at 21.6 inches, with 10-inch front and rear wheels and a published curb weight of 111 pounds. Its 49cc four-stroke engine uses a carburetor and kick starting. Riders select three gears with their foot, while the clutch operates automatically. Honda also provides keyed ignition and an adjustable throttle limiter. Those features support adult oversight; they do not replace it.

CRF110F: more room, with an automatic clutch

The CRF110F pairs a 109cc four-stroke engine with fuel injection and electric starting, plus a backup kickstarter. It keeps the automatic clutch, with four foot-selected gears. A 25.9-inch seat, 14-inch front wheel and 12-inch rear wheel make it a different physical fit from the 50. Its 169-pound curb weight is another reason to compare the actual machine, rather than choosing by engine size alone.

CRF125F: a manual-clutch option

The standard CRF125F introduces a hand-operated clutch alongside its four-speed gearbox. Its fuel-injected 125cc four-stroke engine has electric starting and a backup kickstarter. The 29.1-inch seat, 17-inch front wheel and 14-inch rear wheel are worth comparing in person. Published curb weight is 194 pounds. For a rider moving from an automatic clutch, clutch control becomes a separate skill to learn.

CRF125F Big Wheel: compare the taller configuration

The Big Wheel shares the standard CRF125F's engine and manual-clutch controls. Its 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels contribute to a taller configuration, with a 30.9-inch seat, additional suspension travel and more ground clearance. Published curb weight is 199 pounds. Compare both 125s before assuming the taller version is the better choice for a growing rider.

Electric start describes how the engine starts. It does not describe how the transmission shifts.

Bring the rider into the decision

Seat height is a comparison point, not a fit guarantee. Consider whether the rider can support the motorcycle, reach and operate its controls, and demonstrate the balance, coordination and judgment needed to learn.

Honda's CRF50F parent guidance considers physical ability, maturity, instruction and supervision—not age or size alone. Read the manual and labels for the exact model and year, and discuss readiness with a qualified instructor.

The weights above include standard equipment, required fluids and a full fuel tank. They are curb weights, not rider weight limits.

A familiar Honda family, developed over time

Honda traces the CRF50F, introduced in 2004, to earlier small bikes including the Z50A and XR50. The CRF110F replaced the CRF70F for 2013. The two-size CRF125F family followed for 2014, replacing the CRF80F and CRF100F. Both the 110 and 125 families gained fuel injection for 2019.

Questions families ask

Which model is right for my child's age?

Age alone cannot answer that. Compare actual fit, control reach, experience and readiness, following the exact motorcycle's manual and labeling.

Does an automatic clutch mean automatic shifting?

No. The CRF50F and CRF110F still have foot-selected gears; the clutch operates automatically.

Is a CRF150R simply the next size up?

Honda describes the CRF150R and Expert as motocross racing models. Explore those separately if racing is your goal.

Will an older used bike have these specifications?

Not necessarily. Check its year and variant. The 2019 fuel-injection changes are one reason current specifications should not be applied to every older bike.

Where can we find riding instruction?

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's DirtBike School offers hands-on training. Check directly with a provider for requirements and availability.
